Can I put a vote in for the water pistol idea? I used to live opposite a row of OAP bungalows. The OAP's were keen on feeding birds and my cats were keen on eating them (the birds not the OAPS). Each of the four old ladies in the bungalows got a water pistol and used to fire at will at my cats - cats detered with no harm done and a good laugh all round.

One of my neighbours swears by the orange peel solution too.

o-one can complain at you for being cruel to the cats, and you can't be held responsible for your dog's behaviour if he happens to damage one in his own garden.

I'd recommend a Manchester Terrier - Finlay's particularly good ant giving chase, but i am a bit worried that one day he'll follow the cat up a tree and get stuck...

Our old tom cat got a bit frail in his latter years and didn't like to go too far. He decided to use our elderly neighbors lawn as his favorite poo spot. My neighbor kept his grass in perfect condition. It was like a putting green and his pride and joy. He was also mostly blind due to cataracts and couldn't see the poo (most unpleasant to step in or get through the lawnmower). This was not a good situation. He tried to cat proof his garden with our help, he tried a cat trap, he tried smelly cat deterrents, we tried keeping the cat in (which didn't seem fair on the cat and with toddles and a litter tray was most unpleasant).

It was not good as he was a lovely man, but our relationship deteriorated (understandably). I did try to argue it may not have been our cat, but deep down I suspected it was....

He end he found a sonic device that cats don't like. This seemed to do the trick.

A dog or cat of your own would also work.

I would blame you! It's one thing using a dog as a deterrent, and another thing entirely to allow them to 'damage' cats. I assume you didn't really mean it I would go for water pistols, orange peel and sealing up easy assess points with chicken wire. The cats can't help wandering, they don't know any better.

Our cats kept well clear of our neighbours dog. The soon learnt....to nip over the fence and to there business while the dog was out on walkies.

However, be aware that a cornered cat is a formidable foe and comes armed with razor sharp blades on all four paws. In dog vs cat the cat is unlikely to be the ultimate winner but well equipped to cause significant damage ... and dog's vet bill are bigger than cat's vet bills.

Chilli powder during a dry patch. Throw it all over your garden, particularly around the paremeter. It doesnt harm them, they just hate the smell enough to avoid it. Well there is the odd one that will be a dumbass and get it up their nose/bum but it will prob not be in enough concentration to do any harm.

Though I am a big advocate of the idea to get your own cat. ;)

Weirdly enough lion poo manure is also a very effective deterent! (people pee also very good)

Jack Russells work well, we also have two Westies but one of them is blind and the other is cat friendly. The Jack Russell would stand a much better chance if he'd shut up. It's funny to see and the cats just laugh at him, but it does work
