Ignore your hubby - ignore Cambridge

Your clothes are beautiful - I especially love the blue top with the big ruffle sleeves. (*now that you can wear with your bag)

Wear it all with pride - narrow minded fashionistas may not compliment you to your face but you will know they are green inside with envy that you are wearing unique items that they can only dream of. Be a trend setter.

I absolutely LOVE both! Would definitely use the bag as a tote bag in summer and just love the dress.

Good for you. I think you need an etsy shop pronto...

Can we get a how-to on the dress? You make it sound easy but the top bit looks like it could be tricky...

I'm thinking, made shorter, it would be a great wee top over jeans and now that the weather is warming up I'm finding myself short on tops. Somehow all my old ones have been ripped or worn out all at the same time - all great fabrics though - would be great to recycle them!

Wow, thank you everyone for your lovely comments! I'm going to tell my other half he's been comprehensively outvoted  I feel so encouraged, I might even have a go at something with buttonholes... or a ZIP! And you are all quite right, I won't wear them together (Zoe, I do know what you mean about how to use the bag, I agree).

Pattern for the dress - I made it from an old issue of Sew Hip magazine, it is by Heather Ross - I think this is probably broadly the same in terms of shape and you can make it longer/ shorter. Mine has a ruffle on the bottom, which was just a short tube, gathered and sewn on. The shirring is one of those things where it is very easy to understand what you should do and not very easy to actually do it, I had to wrestle with it a bit. This is how I did it:

I hand-wound the bobbin with elastic thread, then sewed a test circle around the top of the dress to check I could actually get it on and it was tight enough (although it tightens up as you sew more rows) - then I adjusted tension on the bobbin accordingly.
Then I sewed continuously all around the bodice in a stepped spiral, doing each step at the side seam. Each shirred row is about 1 cm apart. You have to stretch the fabric out as you go and by the end it is a bit of a struggle!

The problems I had were: because you sew in a spiral, the bodice ends up a bit twisted to one side (but it seems to untwist with wear & encouragement)
You run out of bobbin elastic, and if you don't secure it really well when you start/ stop the stitching unravels. I wondered if it would be better to leave one side seam unsewn, sew shirring rows, and then sew the side seam, securing the elastic, but that might be worse, I don't know.

Thanks again everyone for being so nice :hugish:

Sorry, I'm with your hubby re the bag! But I just don't do frilly, flowery, multi coloured and patterned stuff at all, or handbags other than small plain brown or black leather (and never, ever fashion ones or expensive ones). But I agree, if you like it, then wear with pride and don't worry about what other people think.

I think they are both really lovely, especially the bag. I have a bit of a thing for bags. Im' neither the right age or shape for a sun dress, but you get out there wearing it. If anyone stares it will only be with envy!! pbf.

I love the bag

*steals and runs away*

I don't do dresses, wish I did, but I am the wrong shape and not in the sligtest feminine, I usually end up getting burnt, stung or showing my knickers to all and sundry (and on at least one occasion, all three  )
Having said all that, it is a lovely dress

You are clearly very good at making stuff, you deserve a pat on the back.

Any blokes answered yet? Well then ... this from a bloke.

They're both fine - especially that dress ... I'm a sucker for 70s stuff. Someone's already said not to wear 'em together but, apart from that, go strut your stuff, girl.

I just saw this thread. I love your creations. The bag would look so cute with a white sundress. Just looking at it makes me smile, not because it's funny, it just looks like a bright sunny smile. The dress is great, add some sandals and when other men stare, either he'll change his mind about not liking it or you won't care.

Now that must have been a good day out...

MKG, I'm a sucker for 70s stuff too, and I've just realised (duh) I can get vintage patterns and make clothes from them. I can see my savings disappearing into a black hole. Must get a grip...

Thanks again everyone. Sadly for me, my mother has fallen in love with the bag and claimed it; she mostly wears tasteful ensembles in beige so I don't know how this is going to work out, but, ours not to reason why, so I am getting my scraps together and working on another. I must say, I am enjoying sewing so much I am starting to wonder if I should start an etsy shop to offload some of the things I can't wear and keep me in materials!

Vintage - oh god now I feel old. The 70s and 80s were my eras (in terms of the one where I most cared or knew about fashion). Now what kind of 70s clothes are we talking here, kipper ties and flares, loads of glitter and gold lame with platform boots, Bay City Roller trousers or punk gear?

Yes Susie ,I too love your stuff and yes you should slap your Husband! When I use shearing elastic I alway sew either edge immediately either into a seam or just to secure the elastic cause it does unravel.I make my girls little tops and dresses this way and it is very disheartening to watch it come apart!
Grow it,make it ,eat it, drink it and sleep well!
