It's all over the world. The London group is huge... good for getting rid of things quickly but it's impossible to keep on top of what's coming through and there's intense competition for all the good items!

The Bristol one is pretty big too, can be a bit of a pain with things going so quickly too. Mind you I have got a computer chair, window boxes and jiffy bags from freecycle so far and no one seems to want my junk.

I'd have said it was an American thing; the give away is the registered trade mark sign that seems to be compulsory on all official references to Freecycle®. Officialdom seem to want all groups to be franchised, rather than allowing independent groups to exist - they seem quite keen on that there.

While I'm generally not keen on global homogenisation, I think there's a certain amount to be said for Freecycle groups all adhering to the same basic ethos (eg. everthing is free, your first post should be an offer, etc). Not least because it means that what I experience here in London can then have some bearing on what Nev might experience in Australia, and so forth.

Wulf

ps. for any Londoners, I've got a 15' x 3.5' willow cane fence up there at the moment that you might be interested in.

Is there a main ebsite for this LETS thing? I have googled and can find only specific LETS ie Bradford not round here.

Think its a brilliant idea and we both have skills we can offer - there isnt an engine on the face of this earth that DH can't repair/raise from the dead and I am a tree surgeon/planter by trade.

If anyone knows of LETS in Aberdeenshire can you post details please??

LETS is not the same as Freecycle. LETS is a Local Economic Trading Sceme (or something like that), in which people trade their time and wares for trading units (known, in the real world, as money). You can build up credit (and dept) in much the same way as you do in £s and ps, but the emphasis is on promoting it as a local economy.

Freecycle is just a forum where people can offer stuff they no longer have any need for. The main purpose, it is claimed, is to reduce landfill.

For LETS in Scotland, have a look at LETSLink Scotland, which should point you to your local scheme (though this site badly needs updating); for Freecycle, you need to register with the appropriate Yahoo Group. You could try this useful but incomplete list, or simply type Freecycle into the Yahoo Group search page.
