Stand them in a tray first - when it comes to planting the roots should help hold the soil together. Personally, I prefer using newspaper pots though - they've got a base and are thinner to rot down.

Ours have held for around 5 weeks in the past - although 3-4 is about normal.
Just because it feels good, it doesn't make it right.

We've just planted our beans out, having had them in the toilet roll inners since we planted them about a month ago; seems to work really well, and the rolls themselves are degrading nicely in the ground already. We stood them in a tray, as Wulf suggested, which sorted the open-bottomed thing pretty well, although I had to resist the temptation to pick them up for root observations quite often....!
