kill mosquitoes indoors

The whole reason for the selfsufficientish website was to offer a place where anyone can ask, HOW DO I...? So who knows why it has taken us so long to have a HOW DO I? section, but here it is. So if you want to know how to do anything selfsufficientish then here is the place to ask.

kill mosquitoes indoors

Post: # 202207Post vancheese »

Hungary is suffering under a plague of mosquitoes and subsequently there are more of the evil things inside the house then usual. What methods do people have for indoor control of the pests. Is there anything which I can leave out which would persuade them to leave areas away etc..

we used plug in things in Thailand with some success but not sure about the fumes! better than denge fever though! In Portugal we have insect screens on the windows and I use tiger balm or Avon skin so soft oil as a repellent to stop them eating me. Why dont they eat the OH??? citronella candles seem to work quite well in the bedroom when we are sleeping and my son swears by those green or purple mosquito coils you can buy in camping shops. Oh and I found a solar powered mosquito killer which zaps them but not sure if these blue light things attract more in the first place :dontknow: You can get mains electric ones too in varying sizes too!
Dont envy you!

Mossie nets for sleeping under although I hate the things as they don't allow enough cool air through so they are hot and horrible. Whenever I went to Greece on holiday I used those coils, they stink but they are effective, but you need to close the windows so you have to put up with the heat! We have a plug in insect repellant/killer thingy that OH insists on putting on every night when the window is open - he's always swatting mossies but I don't even hear them and never seem to get bitten by Breton ones. I am too busy itching from harvest mite bites to worry about mossies.

The English solution is to eat Marmite. Supposedly to do with vitamin B but wouldn't swear that it works.

Basically for mosquitoes, screening is the only real solution. Screens on doors and windows. In the open house concept in the tropics a sleeping net is about the only solution. I travel and sleep in my van during the summer in heavily mosquito infested areas, and have a body net made from plastic screen door material and pull it over my head and lower body for sleeping, sort of like a mesh pillow case. This allows sufficient air. Most commercial nets have use a mesh that is too small. The screen door mesh sews easily on most sewing machines.

From the source of all knowledge, Wikipedia ...

British travellers to tropical locations sometimes take Marmite with them to eat during the trip, although it has been shown that the B vitamin complex does not repel mosquitoes.[32] The root of this belief might have been its use during the 1934–5 Malaria Epidemic in Sri Lanka:

“The two things given to each patient were a bottle of the standard quinine mixture and Marmite rolled into the form of vederala's pills. The latter was said to have been the idea of the late Dr. Mary Ratnam and to have been more effective than the quinine itself, such was the degree of starvation among the peasantry. The Suriya Mal workers were amazed to see how this little Marmite revived them and put some life back into them.”

Put mosquito netting over your bed while sleeping. Just fix it to the ceiling above the center of the bed and let it drape around the sides. Should be able to find some on the internet if not available locally.

We have a bit of a midge problem up here too - although we're not as bad as a couple of miles up the road. Apparently the limestone bedrock in this small area doesn't provide suitable breeding grounds so we only get "incomers"  We went to bed one night (a couple of years ago) having left the window open all day. OH came out of the loo to find me quietly closing the bedroom door and heading to the spare bedroom, starkers. A quick look showed him the huge cloud of midges hovering near the ceiling. We left it closed for several days and then went in and hoovered them up.

We now have mossie nets made into window screens so we can have the windows open and a weighted (so it doesn't blow open and be useless) net door curtain.

But I also found on fleabay a solar powered buzzy thing that vibrates at a frequency they supposedly don't like. It was ridiculously cheap and was sent over from Hong Kong for next to nothing and, although it's a bit flimsy, works amazingly well

I found this on *bay- I am puzzled and wonder if the thing you got was anything like this description...

# this machine can lustrate house mouse, black beetle, mosquito, flea, fly, cricket, ant, wood ant etc vermin. So we can call it electronic lustrate mouse machine, electronic helminthes machine etc.
# the ultrasonic that sent out from this machine is far away from hearing range of human being. They will not do harm to human being and pets. Also will not have affect on house machine.
# this machine is safety and environment protected. Smell-less and flavorless. Teeny used energy. (Total power<1W) and with advance photoelectron technology.

Yes hmm sounds... great?

We have a bad mossie problem in Summer (due to the fact the suburb is sinking and puddles can't drain away at the front of our house) so I must remember that I need an electronic lustrating machine!hmmm.

I'm with Durgan, screening is the only solution; so a mozzie net over the bed, a fine mesh over the windows and beaded curtains on the external doors. For dining outside, a combination of candles and a selection of mozzie repellent plants such ac citronella, basil and geranium near seating areas keep all but the most hardcore at bay.
