Cobs or hazelnuts??
Cobs or hazelnuts??
Whatever they are, they are falling from the trees now. Isn't it a bit too early for either?
Re: Cobs or hazelnuts??
Hazel nuts covers them all, cobs and filberts are varieties.
I bet there's nothing in those nuts if you crack one, it's just the tree shedding duff ones.
The good ones should be ripe in September.

Thanks Odsox. You're right. They are duff ones.

Hi all
What do you do with hazel nuts once you have gathered them?
Are the ready to eat or do you have to roast them?

Eat them straight away or leave in a cool dry place for later on.
I have to say I've never heard of roasting them, but then I have led a very sheltered life.

That's just for recipes, the roasting bit of which I always ignore.
You can pick them now in the green, if you need to beat the squirrels. My squirrel's already eating mine.

Re: Cobs or hazelnuts??
Yes they do Mamos. If you pick them still green and just leave in a basket/bowl/whatever they will turn brown eventually.
Or they'll turn brown on the tree and drop when they are ready.

Cool
We went out for a walk with the dogs and because of the gales there were hundreds of hazel nuts on the ground so I though it would be nice to collect some for Christmas
