Hello...is there anybody there? It's me, in East Yorkshire

Hello everybody, I'm Janet and I live near Driffield in East Yorkshire, just added myself to your map but looks like I'm the only isher for miles around (was it something I said?) I'm growing lots of veggies, at least as many as I can fit in my tiny garden which is mostly paved! I've got about 8' x 10' of good earth, plus a six foot square I've just rescued from the paving slabs, plus lots of pots and a couple of good window sills....I also like painting and craft work when I get time (i.e. not that often) - in my ideal world I would be an artist and gardener; in the real world I work for a mail order book company and fit in the nice things around the job, the housework etc. I get a cheap thrill from being frugal (yes, pun was intended) and like cooking, enjoy the challenge of producing a good food for not much money, so I hope I will fit in well here!

Yes, I think you'll find you have a lot in common with us...

Restricted space? I got given lots of surplus seed potatoes. They grow just about everywhere...

How do you manage to work for a book company? I'd be spending all my hard-earned cash on books if I did that! A visit to the book shop is a serious temptation to spend cash (and a must-do holiday treat!).

Working in a bookshop was always one of my dream jobs; but this is a very niche market sort of book company, selling books about tractors, agricultural machinery, heavy haulage, that kind of thing.......try as I might, I can't work up any enthusiasm for the products we sell! How would you like to find 'The Illustrated History of Dustcarts' in your Christmas stocking? Some of our customers do. Each to his own, though - it's a nice little job, and only 10 minutes walk from where I live so I'm not complaining!

Ergh, no. I do rather like old tractors, though - but not to the extent that I would buy books on that subject. (It's rather that I prefer working with them to working with those newfangled fully automatic/electronic/hydraulic monsters they use nowadays, where you need a stepladder to get in, and then a degree in electronics or IT to get them going! The old ones - if they didn't work, you could generally fix them with a kick in the right place. Or the judicious use of a spanner...)

PS: I grew up in a bookshop, and I've worked in a few.

Ooh, just the job for me! Love tractors, machinery, trucks and love books, but no money for either. Now, can somebody open a similar bookshop near me and give me about two days a week work? Please?

Anyway, hi Janet. You'll be pleased to learn that nutters like me are in the minority here...

My OH and I used to live down in Yorkshire - Skipton, that bit of North Yorkshire that's more south and west than north.

Good luck with the vege growing. We started off small ourselves, with a patch behind terraced house, although our vegetable garden here covers more area than our old house and garden put together.

Hi all, thanks for the warm welcome! The website for the place I work is www.classictractors.co.uk - and yes, there are a couple of books on the Fergi 20, and workshop manuals/operators books too. (We are very popular with partners of tractor enthusiasts when Christmas/birthdays come around!) I'll have a word with my boss about putting some books on here, Andy, though there may not be much that would be suitable.
