Plastic demi johns??

Post: # 20352Post Hillbilly »

Are they any good? Will it taste 'plasticy'? I'd buy more glass ones but I'm absolutely skint at the mo and these are cheap! I have two glass ones but one if full with dandelion wine at the mo so need another as recipe calls for two.

I've brewed in plastic bottles (the big springwater type, less than a quid in T***o- with free spring water!) not noticed any after taste.

This explains the text earlier !!

I asked about this on the INEBG forum... and got a favourable response so will be giving it a go too.... don't worry.. we've got plenty of bottles. Let me know how many you want.

I have not used them (being a newbie to winemaking), but I would always use anything in preference to plastic.

Have you tried putting a wanted post for glass demijohns on your local Freecycle? they seem to come up quite frequently on ours.

must admit, I'd go for glass in preference, especially if you're going to bung something acidic in - I seem to remeber something rather worrying about many plastics leaching "pseudo oestrogens" - :?

I have two of the plastic ones. They do the job but I prefer glass.

Yes and never get anything back from Freecycle. I'd REALLY rather not use plastic but in this case I will (and I am recycling Shirl's water bottles!)until I can get some more glass ones.

thanks Shirlz - it's from my coverage of the Glastonbury Festival - this was from 2004 - some bloke had some amazing wooden sculptures that seemed to "say something"

I love taking pictures - everyone shoots the bands, I prefer "the other side"
of the festival - hopefully, I'll do a set of the Big Green Gathering this year! 8)

There should be no problem with plastic - as long as you only storing the wine in it for a short time (i.e. the few weeks it takes to ferment before you bottle).

99% of beer homebrewers ferment in plastic without problems. Come to think of it my 5 Gallon plastic primary has pictures of wine bottles & grapes all over it so there's your answer :-) I had to cut the top of it because it had a sealed lid with a hole for an airlock (I don't bother with an airlock for beer, the krasen keeps out the nasties until the alcohol takes over).

Oh, make sure it's food grade plastic <--- *Very important!!!!*

P.S.
I'm new here. Pleased to meet you all!

Hi noggin - welcome to the forum! What else do you do apart from brewing beer?

I think that most of the big wine and beer producers, at least the cheaper ones, probably use plastic for a lot of things, too. I still have my problems with buying wine in tetra paks, though...

Hi Noggin! and welcome!

Yes, its only short term stuff - cheats cider and treacle ale. The long stuff (dandelion etc) is in glass so no worries there. Still looking for more glass ones though.
