eggs ?

Post: # 212554Post JessieMac »

I was cleaning out a corner of the garden today and when I lifted out a roll of plastic mesh I found that the end of the roll had been filled in with a large ball of wet moss and there were four white eggs in the middle of it,they were about the size of a robin egg,the tube was standing upright in a large pot and the moss ball was in the bottom so I can't see how this could be a birds nest........could it be some kind of reptile......I've put them back just in case...........Jessica :flower:

Sounds exciting - I don't know what it could be though! Wrong time of year I'd have thought! I've seen grass snake eggs and they are quite small but there were loads of them all laid in our compost heap - I don't suppose a snake could get in the roll very easily - maybe it is a lizardy type of thing (I'm not very knowledgeable about reptiles).

Wet moss doesn't sound ideal for any kind of nest. It may be that the nest isn't now in the position it was built. Possibly a bird made the nest at the top of the roll and it somehow slipped down the tube - maybe when it got wet, or that may have happened since. In any case, it sounds abandoned.

Most reptile eggs need a high level of humidity to develop and hatch properly.
Unlike birds eggs they can dry out pretty quickly due to the somewhat leathery shell that can absorb moisture from it's surroundings.
A bone-dry nest of snake or lizard eggs is most likely dead.

If you want to make sure it's a nest of reptile eggs just give one a very gentle poke with your finger.
If it feels like a small tough waterbomb its not a bird's egg.
And it's pretty common for reptiles to abandon their eggs after laying them.
