Glut of celery

Post: # 214814Post surfpeach »

I have rather a lot of celery, it was only supposed to be a few plants but they all germinated and grew really well! Does anyone know if you can freeze it? I can't really eat anymore celery soup. Any recipes welcome? Thanks

Show off!

My one and only venture into celery growing resulted in some spindly, woody and very bitter celery :pukeright: Maybe when I win the lottery and have enough land to spare for trying it again, but then again.....

Anyway, in answer to your question I'm not sure about freezing it. It obviously will freeze but it has such a high percentage of water I don't know what it would be like on defrosting. I'm guessing it would still be useful for cooking though so why not give it a shot.

You could extend your celery soup season through 12 months

Absolutely agree with Susie - frozen celery, although edible, is far from appetising. Better to freeze the soup, or blanch the celery and then stick it in the food processor with a little of the water and then freeze it (which is virtually soup anyway) in small batches. Then you could use it as a flavour additive for ... ermmm ... soup?

Me too, and I couldn't be bothered to blanch it so it is still sitting there looking spindly and pathetic. So it's not just the lack of water that causes it to be thin and stunted!! I was going to try again with the seep hose next year. :?

So I can't be helpful on this thread as I've never had this problem of a glut of celery to deal with!
