Heating a Polytunnel

The whole reason for the selfsufficientish website was to offer a place where anyone can ask, HOW DO I...? So who knows why it has taken us so long to have a HOW DO I? section, but here it is. So if you want to know how to do anything selfsufficientish then here is the place to ask.

There's really no need to heat a whole polytunnel unless you're growing WAY out of season, and in Bedford you should be sowing from around the last week in Feb most years. Apart from a small electric propagator for really early sowings of tomatoes etc, adding a cold frame or tunnel cloche INSIDE the tunnel is probably all you'll need. It gets much warmer inside one of those than the rest of the tunnel!

As for livestock, I did the maths a while back and each chicken produces 10-15W!
