Hi!
On Sunday, we harvested the first of our rhubarb...looks amazing, strong thick stalks, lovely pink colour right thru' - terrific crop. Stewed some for dinner, made some jam and put the rest in a bucket for wine. So what's the problem? It tastes salty!!!!!
Used our own compost as always - only this year, the OH "helped" the compost along [after listening to gardener's question time]. Now, I know it's not my imagination, it really does taste salty. I've chucked the stewed fruit and the jam into the compost bin but I really don't want to lose the potential wine. It's in a bucket - on 22nd May Sunday afternoon with a campden tablet settling into a coldwater soak.
Please can someone suggest how i can get rid of the salty taste? By the way, we use seaweed as well and we've never come across this 'situation'. The OH takes a bucket load of tablets every day to stay alive, would that make a difference maybe?
Thanks for your time, hope someone has a remedy!

OK, me again...just read my posting and I feel I have to point out that it's the rhubarb that tastes salty and not the compost!!!! Another CRAFT moment...doh!

Re: My rhubarb tastes salty
Its probably a bit late now, but it might have been worth getting someone else to taste it just in case it is something in your diet that is affecting both of you
I use very little salt or sugar in my cooking, but just occasionally I really get a longing for it. I can tell when its coming on as I start looking at packets of crisps longingly. I normally sort it out by a few boiled eggs with plenty of salt, but it may be that with the seaweed meal you are getting all the minerals you need and your body is telling you that more is unnecessary
Just a thought
All the best

Hey Sue, thanks for replying!
I should have said this on my original post...yes, I have had various tasters/testers and we are all of the same opinion...except my OH.
Found out that a cut up raw potato can reduce the saltiness from cooking - at this stage it's worth a try, got nothing to lose but lots to gain!! Going to try washing the 'barb again [as in rinsing it thru' a colander...hmmm, maybe a sieve then...] and chuck in a potato with some lemon juice and then keep my fingers crossed. Will keep you posted
- keep you posted eh? OK...I laughed tho'.
