A natural deodorant that really works.

I have been experimenting over the past three or so years with many products which are as close to nature as possible, but deodorant has always been one of those that I have been disappointed by until now.......drum roll.

I came across this out in blogland and as I already had all the ingredients I thought I would give it a go, half expecting it to be yet another thing that I wouldn't be bothering with again.

I made my batch with Tea tree and Lemon EO's and arrowroot powder, and I will not be returning to any other form of deodorant again This works, and for the sake of the human who has to have their face in your armpit (if you happen to be unfortunate enough to use London underground in the height of summer ) give it a go. I'd love to know how you find it.

I'd like to try but having read all the discussions there seems to be lots of variations. Would you mind posting the recipe for your batch? And what are lemon EOs?

Ok my batch was as follows.

1/4 cup baking powder
1/4 cup of arrow root powder
6 tablespoons coconut oil
10 drops Tea tree essential oil
10 drops Lemon Essential oil

Bung it all in a food processor and whizz until mixed. It still feels a bit grainy when you apply it but I don't find that a problem at all.

EO is just short for Essential Oil.

I don't know what cups is in grams, but I just used my bread making cup which worked just fine for me.

I'd love to know how you get on with it though, and as she says in her blog less is more, so it should last a good long while too.

Thank you for this, I might give it a try - deodorant is one of the few things I've never found a good natural alternative to!

I tried a powder version - just bicarb and cornflour. It seemed OK to start with, but the whiffs built up after I'd been using it for a few weeks. I guess that whatever bugs are making my pits stinky get killed by the commercial stuff, but are resistant to bicarb. I know it works for some people, though, so it might be that I'm just particularly smelly!

I'm now alternating home-made with shop bought, and that seems fine. Incidentally, I've had pretty much the same experience with home made laundry gloop, so I now alternate that with shop-bought, too.

Zech, I had exactly the same problems as you did in that I could use something 'natural' for a while but then the whiff just seemed to build up, so I always alternated natural with decidedly unnatural although I was never really happy about it. This has been the first product where I haven't had to do that, which has astounded me to be honest.

I wish I could now find a washing detergent that does the same thing as I had to resort beck to a branded one after trying soap nuts, ecover and other more natural ones. The hunt is still on there.

SusieGee I tried Pitrock both as crystals and spray but neither worked at all on me, so I think I must just be more stinky than you It works fine for my husband funnily enough though, but now he's using this one too.

I just want to find an antiperspirant with NO PERFUME which is also good for sensitive skin and hypoallergenic. Why do they all come as separate things? i.e. surely sensitive skin and hypoallergenic should be one and the same thing? And why oh why are they both so horribly stinkily perfumed?

I can get unperfumed in the UK but not in France. But it's not for sensitive skin!

Hi All.

Really interested to see this thread. I used lynx deodorant for many years, but now seem intolerant to it, as it makes me itch. I've tried other deodorants from the body shop and hamilton, but they have the same effect. I'm not particularly smelly, but if I don't use something, washing alone does not seem to work. Has anyone else actually had an intolerance, or is it more a preference for something natural. I think i will try the pitrok to begin, and then go down the make my own route.

I'll make a note of that and read up about it - thank you very much for offering but I've got a friend coming over to her holiday home at Easter and she is my personal shopper in return for jam and chutney so I may ask her. I was using Mum unperfumed from England and now some perfumed hypoallergenic French stuff, but whatever I use I always end up with itchy armpits after a week or two and have to have a day off occasionally - which is OK in winter but not so in summer - I do get stinky quickly without an antip.

I have used the crystal sticks (not PitRok but the same stuff) rather than the spray. You simply wipe it over your wet armpits after a shower and it works brilliantly. If you've not showered then you need to wet the crystal first. Really really cheap as it lasts about 3 or 4 years (the crystal not the application :)), no white marks, no nasty chemicals and no smell. Can't recomend enough. Have tried various bicarb based ones and they're OK but a bit messy an phaffy.
