First life of 2012 - What are you sowing?

Hmm well I sowed my broad beans and onions seedlings just after Xmas so that doesn't count as 2012 - even if they didn't show till this year. Far to early for anything serious up here though will have to check seed packets for February.

I planted onions, broad beans and garlic before christmas and all are well through but i hope this cold snap that we are going to get keeps of the tips

I also started my shallots last year, but haven't planted my garlic yet.
But I did make a start today, I sowed a pinch of summer cabbage and some cauliflower in a pot, also a plug tray half of carrots and the other half spring onions.
Also sowed my this year's geraniums, but that I suppose is not allowed in the "Herbs and Vegetables" forum.
All are now comfy in the propagator.

What no tomatoes?

So far I've sown some onion seeds. I could do with getting the leeks seeds in soon. Then there are the annual flower seeds that need sowing soon because they work best with a long season.

I know this doesn't count, but my garlic went in last November.
Spring cabbage pulled up today as the slugs had ruined them. More cold weather please.

Have got overwintering onions, spring cabbage and broad beans in since late last year. Have got another packet of broad bean seeds in my jacket pocket with the intention of planting them at some point soon. Will be putting garlic in soon too. Last year's kale is sprouting nicely, had to stop hubby pulling it up last week and feeding it to the goats!!

Want to get some salad crops in soon, tried to overwinter some in the polytunnel but they just rotted where they sat, very disappointing. Anyone grow winter salad who could give me some hints??

I have found that it is best to grow cos type lettuce so that the leaves stay off the soil, water well when you plant them ... really soak the whole bed, and then don't water again. I can raise mine to full size plants without any more watering.
In the unlikely event that they flop through lack of moisture, water very carefully at soil level and never wet the leaves.

You can get a quick crop indoors by sowing loose leaf lettuce in a small trough on a sunny windowsill. If you sow now you could be harvesting leaves by the end of February.

Well today I've planted a tray of polyanthus on a cool window sill and a pot of basil for the daughter when it shows. Not a lot. As soon as I can get the broad beans out of the way and outdoors I can get something else going (lavender and parsley for someone else I suspect).

But most things won't be started till March up here as it's grim up north and now is far to early unless you are the folks who show leeks - in which case you will have been busy since Xmas at the latest.

All systems go here now.
I have two rows of potatoes planted in the polytunnel several weeks ago now and another two rows planted in the garden today.
As far as seeds go I have leeks, second batch of lettuce, second batch of carrots, calabrese, broad beans, dwarf & climbing French beans, peas, loads of tomatoes, beetroot, melon turnips, basil and stevia.
More to come as space becomes available in the propagator.

The only things I've ventured outside to plant are pots and broad beans. I've planted some indoor toms, cucumbers, which I am suspicious of as I'm sure the date was later last year so I've only planted a couple, then radishes, and spinach.

I got started on the indoor propagator last week - brussels sprouts and cauliflowers are up already!

I've also sown chilli's, aubergine, pepper and tomato in the propagator, and got started on more herbs for the year - rosemary, curly and flat leaf parsley, basil and tarragon.

The potato's are chitting and I might risk an early start this weekend, and bring them into the outhouse if there's any chance of frost. I bought a huge bag for £1.99 so I figure I've got a few to play with.
