Ropey beetroots

Post: # 26056Post shiney »

OK, I didn't thin them too well and they have lovely leaves and piddly roots. Should I just cut the leaves and use them in a salad or what else can I do with them?

OK Nev, how do I get shot of that then? The radish were a bit puny as well! We used a lot of our compost in that little raised bed. Maybe too much goodness eh?

Probably just the wrong ratios Shiney! Put in a leak crop and then try a root crop next time. No much you can do for the stuff already in I am afraid!

Cook the leaves like spinach. They taste pretty much the same as spinach beet! I didn't like my beetroot last year (white) so I chucked them but froze the greens which we are still eating!

The only time I have had a problem with beetroot was when I tried to grow them in a window box and they were piddly. I left them for another year and harvested the seeds. - actually forgot to plant them and I think they got lost in the move so can't report how well they grew. er not so good advice there then

Some beetroot leaf recipes on the main site inspired by m3 if you want a look.

I think it would only reduce it in the very top bit of the soil and then only temporarily, once the mulch is breaking down the nitrogen is re-released - plus!

That's the way I think it works anyway Andy!

Not saying you have big pants m3

That me told then Nev - I was not sure about that at all.

You could try again in a better spot shiney, you can still plant burpees golden in July. I planted some last week, you can eat the leaves and the root.

roflmao at the big pants comment...

We've got some more beetroot to plant out but don't expect miracles from them... soil is poor.. next year it will be better!

At least the trees have been cut down now though!! We can start playing with our veggie plot properly
