If you dont have GCSE's or their equivalent (O'levels, 1st Diploma) and you're in the UK you're entitled to free courses to get qualifications to that level whatever your income.

Courses available depend on your local college but normally include things like environmental conservation, agriculture, carpentry, plumbing and building courses, which are all pretty handy for the self sufficient aspirer :)

If you're on means tested benefits there are a lot of free vocatioonal courses and 50% leisure courses available.

And if you're over 60 then you can generally get a discount.

And if you don't fall into any of those then have a look at the short courses anyway as I'm just signing up for a beekieeping introductry day course which only costs £24, a Country Scavengers Larder course which is only £20,and a 10 week organic gardening course for £104. Pretty good value and theres a load of others which are equally cheap (They're all at Wiltshire College and not all on the website but are in the Course Directory, but most of the agri colleges do similarily good stuff)

I'm interested in the Country Scavengers Larder course also, do you have a web link to it?

sobs... a bath telephone number :( miles away and doesn't even coincide with our time down south.

Andy - couldn't you and Dave provide a similar course???

I did a free online course in web design via vision2learn... will find the link and post it as there were quite a few interesting courses on there too.
