whinham's Industry is a good variety, old fashioned and red instead of green, check out Chris Bowers he is the fruit expert, the site is very good. A lot of gooseberry problems are down to cultivation and pruning

I have hedgerows chock-a-block with gooseberries. They are wild I presume and I have no clue of their breed but they must be heritage as the house is 120 yrs old. They are a bit smaller than the usual 'bought' varieties, green and a bit hairier than most but taste great. They are resistant to disease, loppers and hatchets...I wish I could send you a couple of hundred!
