Did you see T***o advert last night?

Do you think The Good Life could be remade, with me or Dave playing Tom Good (maybe not!)? If you have seen something on TV or heard something on the radio recently that you want to talk about, tell us here.

FWIW, I was in Waitrose the evening, and the check-out woman congratulated me for bringing my own bag. I did point out that's I'd been doing this for a long time now (since Andy started the carry-a-bag thing). I don't think Waitrose is making any particular effort to stop us using carrier bags (though they are probably monitoring the response to Tescos' effort), but if the shop-floor staff are begining to think like that, maybe it's a small victory of sorts.

I wonder how many bags my moaning has stoped! Glad to hear that you don't use your own bag mate.

i have yet to be congratualted by a shop keeper, in fact I think that my local shop will carry on offering me a bag as they know it winds me up. I think they do it on perpose now just to see if I will crack and say yes.

According to the BBC this morning, Sainsbury's are joining in the green campaign and have now got biodegradable plastic bags for their pre-packed fruit and veg. Another step in the right direction...

I always take my self-sufficientish carry-a-bag with me too!

Yeah, I heard about this on the Radio earlier. They're going to review the packaging on organic goods.
Not that I'm a cynic or nuffink, but aren't Sainsbury's promoting an Organic Food fortnight?
Went nosing through the Sainsbury's corporate site. This is how much they care(d) about the Landfill Situation:

hmmm...recycle essex aregiving away jute bags...all you have to do is go to a local show and fill in a compoetition form (i have about 10 now...)./ Why can't sainsbury's?

Recycle essex have also given me 4 cotton bags, and countless numbers of recycled pens and pencils over the summer - i use them at work so i don't use the non - recycled ones that they buy in.

It seems a shame that the big supermarkets can't sell cotton/jute bags instead of the bags for life. If recycle essex can afford to give them away, then shy can't the supermarkets?

P.S. I don't know if other councils are doing this too...

I work at T***o, and overall the green clubcard points have gone down pretty well with customers. I probably am one of the annoying checkout people that start packing shopping into new bags, but I do always look out or ask if the customer has their own bags beforehand (sometimes customers are non-responsive or have their bags in a handbag) because part of the Every Customer Offered Help policy is that we pack the first and last bag and can can get a warning for not doing so. My store saves about 15,000 bags a week.
If the cashier does not add on your green points then go to customer service and they will put the points on there. It is still quite a new thing, so please don't be offended if the cashier forgets. I have forgotten to do it a few times, but apologise afterwards and direct the customer to the service desk.
Remember that it's not just carrier bags that you can get points on. You can get points on reusing the cardboard wine carriers, the blue boxes (or any sort of box), trollies, basically any container that you can put shopping into. I have also given points to people that could have taken a bag but decide to carry their shopping in their hands, so it's always worth asking.
To be honest, I don't think T***o is trying to make money out of this...except from attracting more customers. Most clubcard holders have been sent free coupons for 'bags for life' so it's not the case that they are trying to get people to pay for bags instead of taking their free bags and of course, once you bought several bags for life or got them free, you will never need to buy one again.
I will just say though, please don't get pissed off if a cashier opens a few bags for you...I've had quite a few customers tell me "I dont need those I have my own bags" before I can even finish saying hello. We are only trying to be helpful!
