Guess what i have done, i have contacted the council, and told them to come and collect the two recycle bins i have on my smallholding, i don't use either one is for garden waste which is compostable, and the other one is for paper, which i store and use shreddied for bedding for my rabbits or use to fuel my fire in the winter.

i also store and recycle all my jars and glass bottles for jams, chutneys, sauces etc
and all plastic drink bottles for growing vegetables in on my garden.

so what do i need an inadequate recycling system for.

When I moved to this house it had an enormous dustbin. I rang the council to ask for a small one & they were also speechless. Very pleased to oblige though. Apparently they had more demand for the big ones. I hoped that in the 4yrs since then the good people of Leicester would've got the recycle message (if not reduce & reuse). But a friend has just gone through the same process in her new house & got exactly the same response.

Now I've thought of this, I can feel an email to my councillors coming on.

good for you - if only more cumbrians were more like you - my neighbours can barely be bothered to use the recycle bins for recycling - much prefer to put everything in the bin

thats great to hear, living in a council house and having a gas fire I do admit to needing a waste collection, but still I use newspaper for mulch, reuse glass jars/bottles I hardly ever have plastic bottles. If you use ecover there is a site where you can buy in bulk from them but also send back your empties for them to reuse.I put the main waste bin out once every two weeks if full but somtimes once a month. What anoys me is that we are a family of 5 but a neighbour is a family of 2 but there bin is always overflowing and if mine is half empty they stick it in there if it's on the street.

Some people complained to the local paper about the inconvenience of putting things in different bins and boxes!!!! sometimes I could give up.

I know what you mean Dibnah. I live in a small terraced house, my bin & recycling box go out once a month at most. A couple of doors down is a family of 3 & their bin (a big one) is always overflowing within 3 days of it being emptied. I know this because they leave the bin out on the street. Their recycling box is never out.

What can any of us do to change the minds of these idiots, who won't recycle at all.

i think we should at least try, but where would be the starting point, especially when you see the world around you suffering at the hands of global warming
