Cooking Corn on the Cob?

You all seem to be such proficient chefs. Well here is a place to share some of that cooking knowledge. Or do you have a cooking problem? Ask away. Jams and chutneys go here too.

Cooking Corn on the Cob?

Hello, Can anyone tell me the best way to cook corn on the cob, so that it isn't tough. Do I boil or roast or a bit of both. Thanks barb :flower:

Boil with half a teaspoon of brown sugar. Stand and roll in butter. Add Salt. Bob's your Uncle.


If it's tough you may have picked it too early. Only pick when the cob hairs brown off and resist opening the cob leaves to look at them when they are growing. :mrgreen:

I usually bring a pan of water to the boil then pop the cobs in for two mins max. Not tough but hot and just cooked to perfection. Don't forget to whack on a good knob of butter, salt and pepper. Delish! :flower:

Did you grow them yourself? The sooner after picking you can cook them, the sweeter they'll be. I love them barbecued. Delish.

Put the water on to boil - when it`s boiling, run outside, pick cobs, race back and throw them into the water - 30 seconds! :lol:
Actually, I like them grilled, but the old teeth aren`t so good now and I have problems gnawing them off the cobs aaah!

You're right, the shorter time the better! BBQ'd are nice too, but as you say you gotta have a good set of nashers!

Now might be a good time to mention that, if frozen, corn on the cob is the only vegetable you should defrost before cooking. Personally I roll them in butter and add WAY too much salt. Can't be beat, even if I pick at my teeth for hours afterwards and ALWAYS burn the roof of my mouth with the first bite.

Thanks for all of your replies and suggestions. Seems mine have been tough because I cook them too long. I got them from the Green Gym after a volunteer session. We hope our own lottie won't be to long in the waiting now. The end of December is the next allocation time. barb :flower:

Three minutes on full power in the microwave seems to work for me.

I wrap them in greaseproof paper as well, just something I read not tried it without - seems a waste of paper though.
