I found a fascinating website today, exhibiting pictures that give some sense of the scale of American consumerism. For example (apologies for the large pic but it didn't give thumbnail versions):

That is created from the number of cans of soft drink consumed every 30 seconds! America, as a very consumerist society with lots of people obviously generates an extraordinary amount of rubbish; I suspect that similar art from other countries would still have far more "material" to work with than might be ideal!
