Hello from The Whitsunday Islands, Queensland, Australia.

Post: # 61541Post Willow »

Hello all,
My name is Willow. I live on 6 acres in North Queensland and work on beautiful Hamilton Island in the Whitsundays. I'm an ex Kiwi and I grow all the food (meat & veges) we need with a little left over to sell. My wife & I are both in our early 50s and we keep cows, goats, sheep, pigs and chooks. We have 4 vege gardens (mostly no-dig) and I'm in the process of setting up a food forrest / duck habitat. I am keen to learn from others on this forum as well as offering whatever help I can to those new to the game.

Hiya Willow, and welcome to SSish!

Sounds great what you are doing - what I'd like to do, too, if only work wouldn't get in the way all the time!

Wow! What a friendly place. Thank you for the welcome. Hamilton Island is a major tourist resort just off the Queensland coast. You can google it if you would like to have a look. I drive 3/4 hour to the Harbour then travel 1/2 an hour by fast catamaran to work and back each day. My wife and I both leave home before sunrise and return home after dark in the evening. We therefore tend to our gardens at night under floodlights. The big advantage of this is we beat the tropical heat. I also have an arrangement with 4 friends to have a fortnightly working bee at each others place in turn. It is amazing how much work 5 men can get done in one day.
Hope to chat to you all around this forum over the next few months.
Willow.

You have a long journey to work, but it sounds like it sure beats the average dull commute! Do you ever get bored of the scenery?
