Spiced pickled runner beans

You all seem to be such proficient chefs. Well here is a place to share some of that cooking knowledge. Or do you have a cooking problem? Ask away. Jams and chutneys go here too.

Spiced pickled runner beans

Post: # 6057Post Chickenlady »

This is basically a chutney. A good way to use up the runners and it is really nice!

It is a Delia recipe. Here is the link: http://www.deliaonline.com/recipes/r_0000001290.asp

Made a load yesterday, but think I will do some more for Christmas presents!

Ohh that looks good. I do like pickles of any kind. I think if you make them now, you are supposed to leave them until Christmas to mature.

Now...I have to go and find someone with a glut of beans! (I only had room for some dwarf beans this year)

Thanks for sharing that recipe. 8)

I was given a recipe for Runner Bean Chutney many years ago and it is now a firm family favourite. It was from an old WI chutney booklet. It is very similar to Delia's recipe. It keeps really well too - if you can keep the family away from it long enough to find out! I like it with cold turkey at Christmas.

This is OH's favourite recipe.

We have probably made 6 batches already this year.

We have particularly voracious runners, and there IS a limit to how many you can eat.....

well you were right! I have just made a batch of the spiced pickled runner beans and it looks and smells delicious...now I have to wait for a whole month before I can eat it. I shall be down at my allotment tomorrow picking more beans though as my brother has already ordered a few jars...good job I save all my jars...thanks again for the recipe....and any other ideas to use up vegetable gluts please post them here as I, for one, would be very grateful.

They seem to have moved the page to here:

I'll have a go at this myself, but guess who's just taken all the jam jars to the bottle bank.

I think I'll try this recipe next year but with French beans - don't think it will make much difference. I didn't grow enough plants this year to have many left over (makes a change from the other veggies!).

Thanks for this recipe. I made some on Sunday afternoon, and have this evening made my wee labels and cloth caps for the jars. I am looking forward to when we can taste it.
