Hi Millie! I don't think you missed anything unless Nev was having a party he didn't invite me to!

I see that thing on a lot of forums when you know damn well there were never that many users online at the same time. I don't know why or how it happens though.

Anyone understand these things?

It happened Monday morning on NEEPS.
there were over a hundred people on line at 4am.
But I have just checked the site to get the latest figures and

" Most users ever online was 395 on Tue Jun 26, 2007 9:49 pm "
from a site with about 350 members that is not bad going
Looking forward to sleeping in a house again

Maybe there is a secret movement that visit boards trying to get their "most users online" count up......Ive not worked out yet why they would do that......

Sassinak, I know they count guests in the most users, so would explain how you had more online that you have joined up..

Our proper stats do state that we have been having a recent upsurge in users and I have had to up the bandwidth to double what used to be fine. It looks like there could have been that many people on here at that time we had quite a few links coming in and pointing to the forum, including one from the yorkshire police that I could not view..... Although I suspect that this is more likely to correspond with the extra amount of spam users we have had trying to join.

Probably something exciting sounding but in reality really dull, like robots from search engines indexing the site .... exterminate ... exterminate

This morning there was just me on line and 19 'guests' - all spammers. I didn't think they counted as 'users' though.

The spooky thing is that I'd never even noticed that was there until yesterday. Then I wondered exactly the same thing.

I thought perhaps the Aussies were having a party and hadn't invited me!

The majority of these users are web search engine crawlers, either updating their search engines or responding to specific search requests - they will always show up as guests. Depending on the forum software (I don't think this one does it) you can actually see them crawling through the site (as in see what they're viewing at any one time). It is always interesting to see what people are sending requests out for. The higher a site's ranking in google then the more 'guests' you will achieve as the site gets into the first page of search results.

On my forum you can go to a Whos Online section and see which ones are indexing, they show up as guest, but when you look up the IP its almost always Yahoo and Google pootling about the place. My mods used to worry about who all these "guests" were

Yes we can see that here. The good news is that now none of those spammers are getting past us anymore. :bootyshake: :sign4:
