Hello from oz

Post: # 63719Post roundthebend »

Still trying to navigate my way around the site, hope i got the right spot for an intro.
I'm in the wet tropics of north queensland australia, growing tropical fruits and small crops with hubby, himself is still commuting from the mines out west, so most of the day to day farm work falls on yours truely.
I love to be as self sufficiant as possible, i grow most of my own fruit, veg and poultry and hope to soon add a few goats for meat/milk production(still working on toxic weeds at the moment). I also stockpile...............have to, as we get cut off in regular flooding.

I'm a way out of the nearest town, growing on permaculture principles, in an area of monoculture sugarcane crops, so it's nice to be able to share ideas with others of a like mind.................wherever they are

basically to stick a picture in - you need to have the picture you want somewhere on the net already - say uploaded on your own website - or there are places that you can upload pictures like photobucket...

then when you have that - cut and paste the URL that is the link to the picture, then in a post here.. hit the Img button you will see at the top of the page, past your URL in then hit the Img button again (to show that is the end of the image link) and then voila! you should have a picture in the middle of your post.

Its a good idea to consider the size of any picture otherwise the post will go horribly big and wide an all.
have a practice in the practice and deleted room

good luck!

Hi Judy!

And welcome!!! :hello2:
I'm also a newbie, joined around the same time as you and really enjoying the site - from the info to the forum, it's great!

It sounds like you have such a cool setup up there in the north of Oz - I'm so envious :notworthy: ! All that space in that climate! I'm from SA - presently living in Cape Town, but years ago I lived more up north - the climate sounds similar to yours. What's 'toxic weed' by the way? I'm clueless! I always thought I was so 'self sufficient' - been reading everything relevant in sight, hoping for the day that I can finally put all my 'knowledge' to use(considering I'm really and truly in the city), but have realised since I've joined this site, that there's so much I haven't even heard of!

So cheers for now! Good luck with the 'toxic weed' and the goats!

Hello Bridgette, I don't know the botanical names of the weeds we are trying to control..........only what the locals call them,
1-sickle pod, a chest high woody weed with yellow flowers, followed by sickle shaped pods...........very prolific!
2-the locals call the second one "piss weed"(sorry no polite way to say it),it smells like cat wee when you step on it or brush up against it, again a woody weed with yellow flowers.

I've been told that both are toxic to stock, slashing is keeping them under control and grasses are starting to dominate the pasture after nearly three years constant effort.

So it won't be long now before i can get a few goats..........just got to do some fencing
