Hey.

I'm from leeds, im 16, studying at Art collage.
Currently live with my folks. I'm getting married next year and looking for
a suitable self sufficent way of living. I'm also saving money for this.

Apart from that, I like to do what I can for the enviroment.

Alot of my peers are not intrested in this kind of thing.
So thats why i joined this forum.

Obviosly I enjoy art and such like. I use it alot to get my messages across.
I enjoy music, I play guitar and drums.

So yeah, hi.

Hi and Welcome from Canada

Great to hear you've got onto this lifestyle early in life, lots of teens here aren't into it here either.

The two youngest 'helpers" I had from Help Exchange ( www.helpX.net) were 19 & 20, and they are going to school and doing part time jobs to achieve their goal.

Good Luck with yours!

aw thank you yugo. I've tried talking to peers about it but they seem to think that being self sufficient is some far fetched dream land and would rather go shop at T***o than hear me ramble on and on...

Ah well.

You're welcome, and if you want to ramble, just email me, I've been doing this gardening and farming life with my parents and then friends since I was 10, so I'll gladly answer any questions you have.

aw thank you, thats very lovely.

It's nice that your family and friends are into that.

I have an aunt who has a gorges garden and grows some of her own stuff, my dad does some gardening.

But apart from that I stand alone.

I'm fortunate enough to have a bigish garden that back onto a wood. So plently of space.

We tried hatching chickens ina home made incubater one year because we have an old hut, but failed.
Giving it a go next year, any tips for that? and I'm saving for a green house. woot!

Give up the incubator and find a broody hen, sorry, I'm not a fan of incubators, I've never owned or used one, just let the birds do their own thing.

You could try getting a couple of year old hens and a rooster and see what they hatch out for you.

As for a greenhouse, mine is just plastic stretched over a 2x2 frame, is 10 ft by 10 ft, not vey big, but good enough.

I start my plants in the house on my dresser which is by a south facing window and then transfer them to the greenhouse. I've also got a big Mercedes van that needs a re-build (flor, roof, insulation) that I'm going to use as a potting shed.

Check all the recycling tips for containers to grow starts in, I've used all kinds of containers over the years and my Dad used wooden flats.

And don't forget to check out Nev's starting mix on the front page.

If you run out of garden space, we use 5 gallon pails with drainage holes in the bottom for Sweet Million tomatoes and kale.

Take Care
Lois
