Hi from Nelson New Zealand
Hi from Nelson New Zealand
Hello everyone I am a 40-ish stepmother growing veges on a smallish, clayey, urban section of about 600m2. The best available spot was covered in gravel so we made some frames and went the no-dig way which 4 months on is going very well. Its around the height of summer and today we ate the first tomatoes but we have been harvesting courgettes for about a month and in the fridge I've also got spinach, peppers, beans, mesclun and rocket.
I'm getting interested in nutrition - it started out with my own when I had a few intolerance setbacks years ago, but now I am starting to see the difference it makes to my plants, in particular the new seedlings. They say that a well-nourished seedling plant transplanted into poor soil will do much better than the reverse, because it's the early days/weeks that are crucial. So far, I've found that to be true as far as disease and bug resistance go. I used to be determined to ignore all such advice, as in, "look ma, no hands!", which I feel silly about now.
I'm enjoying reading your posts and look forward to being in touch with
other New Zealanders...hi also to anyone from Chichester, Carlisle, Norwich or Sheffield where my rellies came from.

Lucky you with your tomatoes, mine have just started flowering. What sort are you growing?
Hi Magpie :) and thank you.
I put some bought "Dwarf" types in, I think in early October, and they are the ones that have had a type of beefsteak fruit. Sort of floury, mushy texture. If I ate toast, they would be nice on it :)
Next I grew some Sub-Arctic I got from Kings. They have small to medium fruit but all green.
I bought a single Acid-free at the dairy for $1 which has full-size green roma-shaped fruit on it.
And I have some Money-maker and Green Tomatoes from seed just coming on because I went and put some no-dig frames in our old conservatory, hoping to have thing going through the winter this time.
Tell me Magpie, do you "tweedle" your tomato flowers to spread the pollen around, or just trust the bees to do it? I was told to do it for the eggplants because the bees don't like them - lazy bees......

Thanks Millymollymandy :) I heard its the safest beach in the country. But its funny saying "the beach" because where I was born, you had to say which one :)Millymollymandy wrote:Hello HelloKiwi!I spent a few days in Nelson once many years ago and it was a lovely place although I really only remember the beach!
