Top 12 Pantry Items

Post: # 82002Post Amaranth »

If you could have just 12 versatile pantry food items, what would you choose? These would be items that could be stored in the cupboards or cellar for long periods of time without needing refrigeration. For this question there is no need to include salt, herbs, or spices as I'll ask for ideas about them later. So which grains, long keeping vegetables or fruits, dried items, tinned or jarred items, etc. would you most like to have?

We have eight 4.5 litre Lock & Lock boxes in the pantry which contain:

1. Plain flour
2. SR flour
3. Sugar
4. Strong white bread flour
5. Wholemeal bread flour
6. Oatmeal
7. Long grain rice
8. Pasta

We have a few smaller ones and various other air tight containers for lentils, split peas, barley and various beans.

If I was to have 4 other items they would be:

9. Bullion Veg Stock
10. Tomato puree
11. Baking powder
12. Vanilla essence

We are fortunate to have an original pantry in the house, only 4ft by 3ft but it is a great asset to have. I really want to empty it and review the shelving, making the one that recesses into the window to have a thick slate finish to help keep things cool (I did have home brew in mind lol)

I would like to build a cold store on a the outside of a north facing wall, along the designs in John Seymore's book - this would be for jars of preserves and pickles, hanging meat such as rabbits and pheasants, and storing large bags of tatties and boxes of veg in sand. I have been meaning to make this for two winters now - perhaps I will build it in the autumn

Gosh, I think I have more than 12 varieties of tea! Don't know how I'd cope if I was forced to choose one.

Okay, this is what I think I'd have:

1) Tea (prob Assam/English Breakfast)
2) Wholemeal bread flour
3) White bread flour
4) Canned chopped tomatoes
5) Mixed dried fruit
6) Mixed nuts (these two are a bit of a cop-out!)
7) Olives
8) Pasta
9) Brown rice
10) Plain flour
11) Caster sugar
12) Mixed dried pulses

Not too hard, really, as I find I use my most basic staples most of the time anyway:

Gluten free pasta
brown rice and lots of it!
tomato paste
rolled oats
brown rice flour
chickpea flour
maize flour
brown sugar
mixed pulses (we usually have lots of lentils on hand, as they cook up fast)
baking powder
tinned fish (tuna/salmon/anchovies/sardines)
gluten free granola (which has lots of fruits and nuts in it, so sort of takes care of 2 essential items in one)

Fun exercise. :flower:
