Thanks for that - I have some Aquadulce (forget the full name) and will be following that advice just as soon as I'm allowed to remove sling from right arm (op to repair tendon just before Christmas but it was salsa what done it, not the allotment!)

Hi Christine.
Sorry for the delay - Yes a winter variety of Broad Bean can be sown Nov - Feb ish. They are apparently less susceptible to black-fly than spring sown varieties. I wouldn't know - this is my first attempt. I'm using Aquadulce Claudia too.

Cheers

Thanks for that - Claudia seems to be the one to go for, then.
Blackfly wasn't a problem for me until late last summer, when the runner beans got infested. Pinching out the tops of broad beans once the flowers are turning into beans is supposed to both hasten their production and discourage the blackfly. I was quite impressed with the performance of slugs last year, whom I found trapezeing across leaves at the very tops of the plants.

Got a load of hoeing done and dug a new bed. Pretty hard work and the best excercise I've had for a while!

Yey did loads of planting today, feeling very happy, spring is on its way. Went to the allotment and planted some broad beans, carrots and parsnips, and at home for the greenhouse and window sills I planted some tomatoes, cabbages, lettuces, rhubarb, sage, basil and broccoli! I am very pleased, was such a lovely sunny day today too.
