Hi one and all

Happy to be here on the selfsufficientish site

I live in Kent (UK). I enjoy working in my garden and hoping this year to make the moves to achieve a self sufficient lifestyle (ish)

I have particular interests in cookery, nature, craft work including a passion for working with glass.

Seems to me like a good site for all sorts of useful info

Bye for now Rosey

Kent's a nicely fertile part of the country to be living in (I'm a "Kentish Man" by birth!). Like Andy, I'd be interested to hear more about the glass... and welcome to the site.

Good evening to you

Nice to be sat down with glass of the red stuff

Thanks to those who replied to my posting yesterday

In answer to the glass question, I’m a bit of a glass anorak. People can only take my glass conversation for so long before they “glaze overâ€Â

Hi Rosey, welcome to the site!

A glass kiln - would you be able to "recycle" glass in that? (Sorry, there's my recycling tick coming out again.) Well, maybe you can turn your hobby into a bit of an income provider!

And Kent - isn't that where they grew (or still grow) all those hops? Mmmh, I think there's a few hobby brewers amongst us, too!

Welcome rosey! we have a very skilled glass man near here, actually. he takes broken glass and melts it down in an oven comprised of car axles, and clay, and uses palm nut kernels as a fuel, and even has a yearly export contract to the US for beads...as molds, he sometimes uses clay, and with a wooden stamp imprints the design, and that mold will usually make three or maybe four designs before losing its edges and quality. only thing is i'm afraid a trip out to see it would involve six hours by air from kent...but he makes good keyrings. and is also our local glass recycler! its always great when people are happy that u take ur rubbish.

as far as i know though he doesnt dye the stuff, he tries to find the right colours. dunno if one can dye glass easily or even change the colours...never asked him. what is your source of glass for working with? house to house after parties or local dump?other?
anyway. welcome!

G'Day Rosie,

Welcome to the site! It is interesting to hear about your glass hobby! I spent 3 years at a local glass container manufacturing plant (ACI Glass Packaging), it is interesting stuff!

Matty, any chance of posting photos of the glass recycling operation?

Hi all

Matty - Thanks for taking the time to post the information about the ‘glass man’. His work sounds fascinating – any chance of getting details on how to contact him? Also you got me thinking about a new source of glass --must have a few more parties..

Wulf= I've no current pictures of glass items-- but what a great idea! And I have a new digital camera – just need to find out how to use it – I’m not very technical

Ina = I'm not sure about using recycled glass in a kiln as fusing requires compatible glass but it I will investigate this so --ta---and yes Kent is the land of hops

Wombat - what did you do in the glass manufacturing plant ?

bye for now

Welcome Rosie,

What a lovely hobby to make stained glass. I would like to have a go at that, there's so much to do in life and so little time!
If in doubt ~ use a hammer!
