solar panels and existing central heating

Post: # 85455Post joholondon »

Dear all,
It's been a while since I've visited and now I need your expert help again!

I'd like to replace my dodgy old boiler (c. 20 years old), with an efficient condensing boiler and solar panels. I don't know if anyone else has done this? Two questions:

- how does the solar system fit in with the condensing boiler system? (I understand I will no longer need my hot water cylinder for the condensing boiler... )

- can I fit the solar panel on my back wall if it's mounted at a 45 deg angle? It's a south facing wall of a two bed ground floor flat.

Actually, another question. How would I work out how many panels to get?

best bet is to ask the experts....... http://www.navitron.org.uk/forum/ - have a good read through the forum, then join up and ask for help for your system, you'll get the benefit of several opinions - you may recognise one of the Admin (Me!)

Thanks for this, but I don't really have time to become an expert myself - though I'm quite happy to learn a little. What I really need is answers to specific questions!
I approached a company called Smart Energy but they said it's not possible to wall mount the solar panels. And they also wouldn't be able to replace my existing boiler. Does anyone know a company that could do both? I just want someone to come and sort it out for me!

 - that's precisely WHY I posted the above link! - you don't NEED to become an expert - just join up, and put a post in the "installers wanted" thread - you will probably have several good small local companies very happy to give you a FREE estimate, and who will do you a much better job than certain national bunches of crooks! (who will charge 2-3 times as much, employ dodgy salesmen, and dangle the bait of "you have been chosen" or offers of virtually impossible to obtain grants - ring any bells yet? )
Were you in my area, I'd offer to do it ourselves, but you're way out of area, and I've pointed you in the same direction I point all referrals who are at a distance - because I know that they will look after you, do a good job, and won't rob you blind!

no probs - I've referred loads of people, and I've never been let down - they're all small companies keen to have a good local reputation (and don't work on the "mug a minute principle" - like certain smartarse companies.... )
