Hi Snapdragon, My Mum grew snapdragons eons ago.
You definately don't dig to start a no dig garden. Just put newspaper on the lawn, dirt, sand, concrete or whatever and build some layers of straw/ compost.
Try to get hold of a booklet by Ester Dean. She describes methods suitable for people with all manner of ability/disability.
