Just what it says on the tin! The dh was charged with this task two christmasses ago and we've finally done it!

Well, we have no hot running water anyway so a dishwasher is about the only way we can get dishes clean anyways

yay nice one! if I could find out how much water mine uses I could attach a tank to it and therefore not need it plumbed in in the kitchen... until that happens it's in the spare room not doing anything.

Totally hijacking this (well done on finally selling the dishwasher, circlecross, by the way!!), when people say that dishwashers are more eco-friendly, what about the fact that you normally have to do some washing up by hand anyway? You can't put dirty pans or anything like that in the dishwasher cos they don't get scrubbed and cleaned properly, so you'd still have to use nearly the same amount of water and energy to heat it to do those by hand as if you were doing everything by hand in the first place. Or is my parents' dishwasher just really low-tech and old-fashioned, and can modern dishwashers do pretty much anything now?

i dont like dishwashers, although stuff does get cleaned i live in a hard water area and my friends glasses come out looking groggy , put me off for life

Well... our dishwasher is a crappy fitted thing, it seems to let water out the bottom, the floor under it is always wet, it does get things clean though including pots and baking trays... as we have to boil our kettle to wash dishes by hand, and even then, one kettle full is never enough so the few handwash things sit for several days before they get done, as it is a big job and I usually have something more important/ interesting to do.

If the woodburner is lit I'll heat up a huge pot of water on it and do the dishes that way.

I never had a dishwasher before but I am now addicted and when we get our new kitchen I will definetly have one (a better one than we have now though)


The thing is that with all these 'which is more eco friendly' they never compare appropriately. They will say that the dishwasher is on once a day but handwashing gets done 6 times a day, they will say you use 2 drops of washing up liquid or a full tablet for a dishwasher... do you see what I mean? It is never a reliable comparison.

I find that running some water to do a stockpile seems to use less than a full dishwash load, and yes, there are often things I have to wash again or cannot do in the first place. It has gone, anyway! We have a boiler, btw. I know some people swear by their dishwasher, but I prefer to do them by hand. That's just me. We now have a lovely present of two full boxes of ecover tabs to give to my sister or MIL! And some rinse aid.

There comes a time when certain tasks become more and more onerous. Dishwashing is one. We have a dishwasher. I would sell all of your souls not to give it up.

I think ISE are just about to bring out a dishwasher - I'm well impressed with their washing machine, so that might be one to look out for!

My sister has just bought a miele one, it was 'Which' best buy and that would probably be about what we would go for - we have a miele washing machine and I love it, plus I do like that they make stuff to last, functional, practicle and reliable... not like some of the tat you can by. That ISE looks like it might be worth a look too.... thanks

Their policy is to make appliances that last; their bigger washing machine comes with an automatic 10 year warranty, and they expect them to last longer than that! Triple A rated, of course.

ISE design things to be repaired easily as well (or at least the washing machine was) so you don't have the ridiculous situation of it needing some part and it being cheaper to buy a new one.
