Hemp Seed Ideas

I've just remembered, my daughter makes her hair gel with linseed. She has curly "hard to manage" hair! 2tblsp linseeds to 1 cup of water, boil briefly for around 20 seconds (longer = thicker). Strain and you can either use it like that or add a couple of drops of your favourite essential oil.

You'll have gathered by now that I am a great fan of linseed!

I have just crushed (no food processor) loads of hemp seed and have been adding them to all sorts of food today, pretty nice even just with butter on a cream cracker. My favorite so far has to be barley with sweetcorn, spinach all cooked then crushed hemp seed and grated cheese added, had it for my dinner well nice. Cheers.

has some useful tips on what pests to look out for, when to harvest, a bit about retting...should get u stared anyway on hemp, if u are still interested. was going to try it here myself, but have not got round to it yet. it's a good starting page, anyway. good stuff on sunflowers here as well. all a bit large scale, but don't mean we cant learn anything from the site! unless of course, you have eaten all the seed on crackers already?

Thanks for that link, Matty - I was quite surprised to get into the site. I'm using the institute computer (eh, yeah... ), and they filter out anything that's remotely "unsuitable". So I've not been able to get into any of the other sites mentioned that have "hemp" in the address! Rather annoying. Even the commercial hemp growers seem to be a dangerous bunch...

Anyway, Andy - if you are really wanting to grow hemp, think about where you do it. Right under your bedroom window would be a good place, with a 8 foot barbed wire fence around it and a couple of guard dogs. I've heard farmers who grew the stuff complain that too many idiots pinched it at night, thinking it was as good as the real stuff - so they gave up on it. It's not just what's stolen, those dummies usually trample down more than they take. Shame, really. But of hemp you'd have to roll a joint as long and thick as a telegraph pole to get the same effect (so I've been told ).

Bird seed has hemp in it. I always had loads growing in my garden. I thought it was marijuana at first!

I don't think that bird seed contains hemp seed any more. I may be wrong. I remember being in France donkey's years ago with some friends and we came across acres of hemp growing. Of course we had to sample a bit but only ended up with a head-ache. You occasionally come across a symbol of a hemp leaf there where, apparently, the farm has a licence to grow it.
I believe they grow it at the paper making place near Cheddar Gorge or Wokey Hole.

I've also been looking at hemp lately - http://www.thehempshop.co.uk/ is a great website that I came across the other day - the stuff looks a bit on the pricey side though. Loads of useful stuff on their site.

I remember a bloke that pitched up in his campervan outside our house in Herefordshire - really nice bloke - and he came in for a glass of wine one evening and we had a really interesting chat about hemp and it's values (other than the illegal activity - honest guv)

I visited the Eden Project last year and they had a lot of information regarding hemp. It seems that the principal reason for it not being grown commercially is the huge lobby from the 'pesticide' companies.
Whereas cotton and other crops require huge amount of pesticide - hemp does not. Anyone have any views on this?

I can quite believe that it's true - I try to buy organic cotton where possible for obvious reasons. Just bought some tshirts and stuff from the people tree - organic cotton and fairtrade which are brilliant. They were in the sale too!!

I've never been to the Eden Project - would like to go one day but it's at the other end of the country from me.

I've had a few things from there - the patchwork dungarees are brilliant for kids... and look so fantastic too. Reversible... so when they get dirty on one side you can turn them inside out and put them back on again!!!! LOL.... just a joke, although that could be useful if you went out for the day and got them a bit mucky.

I LOVE all things patchwork and would like one day to try making my own patchwork something or other...

Only reporting on what Eden Project implied. Have heard the same from other sources. Monsanto is one of the principal culprits. They have a huge influence, especially in America, principally regarding the cultivation of GM crops.

What worries me is a Study done in your neck of the woods, Glasgow University I believe, that out of a number of 'Organic' Soya products purchased at local stores, very few of them, if any, were found to be organic!

Have you ever logged on to the Friends of the Earth Web Site? They have a lot of very useful information. For example: Did you know that Lindane is still widely used to spray Cocoa. Rather worrying for choc-lovers. Still - gone off on lots of tangents here. Sorry.

Yes, I've been on the FOE websites and did know that about the lindane... I tend to eat organic chocolate, but in times of desperate need ANY choc is better than no choc....
