Cleaning burnt milk from pans.

You all seem to be such proficient chefs. Well here is a place to share some of that cooking knowledge. Or do you have a cooking problem? Ask away. Jams and chutneys go here too.

Cleaning burnt milk from pans.

Post: # 97895Post Cligereen »

Let me say I'm an enthusiastic, if not very competent 'isher'. Anyway, last week I burnt some tapioca milk pudding onto the bottom of a stainless steel pan (I think 'welded' would be a better description  ). I scrubbed and scraped and soaked and re-scrubbed but that black layer wouldn't shift.

After two and a half days' soaking, but not shifting the mess, I had a brainwave. I got a 5c coin (eurozone), laid it flat in the bottom of the pan and slid it around with moderate pressure. Guess what - it came off like magic. Just thought it might help some other budding HFWhittingstall type with more enthusiasm than know-how.

Note to self - This method is not brilliant for use on a non-stick pan.

Great idea! Just wonder - will a British coin do the trick, too? (I always have Euros in my "continental" wallet, but I don't think everybody has that...)

it's like you read my mind. i burnt a rice pudding to the bottom of my pan. i've let it soak with bicarbonate but havent tried to scrub yet. if necessary i'll try the coin trick and let you know how a british coin does.

British coins are far superior in every way and will probably clean the pan in half the time

Talked to a friend today about that, and she said she always uses old credit cards for that purpose! Doesn't have to be American Express, either; an old AA card does the trick...

I believe patents have been taken out on far less sensible things...

I used a 2p to clean burnt on curry from a pot and it worked

Thankyou, you saved me hours of scrubing.
