At school I attempted to learn to play the trombone. Mercifully, for my teacher and others within earshot, I had to give up -my arms were too short to reach 6th position!!!

Did you learn anything else? You only need short arms for one of those tiny piccolos or whatever they are called... But they can be quite "unmerciful" on the listener, too!

I took guitar lessons on and off but I wouldn't say I can play one.

Same here. Guitar still stuck in the back of the wardrobe, though...

my son was playing trombone - they gave him a junior size one (age 10) but had to upgrade him to a full size as he's such a lanky lad lol.... he's pretty much my height now at age 11 and has size 10 feet!!! Still, it will come in handy for measuring my super tall sunflower lol

I also have a couple of recorders and a piano here. My mandoline is still in Germany.... Could get half an orchestra together!

I did the trombone at school thing. I quite enjoyed it, but didn't much take to being raked in to after school orchestras and things. And the music teacher didn't help my enthusiasm by describing my efforts as being like a fart.

But I love instruments - just having them. Some of them can just be such a pleasure to hold - the feel of the craftsmanship, and all that... But I wish I could get to musical grips with some of them. I've got quite a collection of mainly beaten up old things. Under the bed I have a saxophone, and the innards of a harmonium; I've a couple of guitars hanging on the wall, next to a mandolin, a balalaika, a tenor ukulele... A friend once said that I make a point of collecting instruments that I can't play. I pick up a guitar every day, but I never get any better at it.

In another life I'd have taken learning an instrument more seriously from an early age. Maybe it's not too late to become a famous international triangle player.

My trombone was like an extension to?of? my body. I hurt when it was hurt. Played in bands and orchestras and absolutely love it, although I was teased a lot. It was most unusual to see a female trombone player in an orchestra in Singapore. Now my 17-year-old niece is doing exactly the same.

But I then switched to the more portable Bb clarinet and now flute. By the way, it's impossible to play flute after a session on the trombone. And as I am not very good at transposing music written in C, I'm sticking to the flute.

I wouldn't dare dream of playing the triangle in an orchestra, though. Seriously, too much could go wrong when all eyes are on you.

When's the next jam session then? ting!

We ought to do a recycled band - make musical instruments out of things that we would normally send to the recyling bin. We could record each other separately and then mix them and come up with a selfsufficientish jingle!!!

I'll be drummer on the dustbin lids - though as mine are plastic it might be a bit of a dull 'thud'!

My chooks can sing nicely though!  Can they join in?

I should think that would be compulsory - my cockerels can join in too, as can the cat and the dog. They all sing better than I do anyway

Exactly my experience, LSP. All the little girlies in my class whinged on and on about why I didn't take up the flute, as if I was only learning the trombone to annoy them. (Or did I? I did go on to graduate in Chemistry).

I was in a few bands in my youth, lead vocals, but wouldve loved to have been a bass player (such a sexy instrument!) or saxophonist. Also really jealous of anyone who can play blues/rock harmonica, have tried for ages to learn but still sound like someone having an asthma attack! As for music,Pearl Jam,Sister of Mercy,Levellers,Hanoi and yes,I know Im getting old but there WERE some good songs written in the 80s,HONEST!
Now, what did I come in here for??????
