We have a really bad problem with wasps ATM (just as the heat is keeping the midgies at bay )
Does anyone have a way of keeping them away, or trapping them somehow?
I think my neighbour may have the nest in his garden as I am pretty sure they aren't in my garden. They are feeding off the compost bins, I can see huge amounts of them buzzing around it and I am quite scared to go near it (especially since reading about Masco and Bongo )

jam jars with lids on filled with a little water and honey - holes in lid for wasp to get in. Friend had these hung up all over her plum trees and they were filled with dead wasps *YUCK*
We've suddenly got a problem with wasps which we never had before. We have a commercial wasp trap that we use and after 3 days it is already full of a good inch thick of wasps and flies (and sadly one butterfly! ). Need to empty it out and start again - we had some flat lemonade which we put in it which they seem to like.
Heard about a good trick , I think it was on gardeners world. Aparently wasps are very teritorial, and they will not go in to another collany's area for fear of attack.
You can buy fake wasp hives to hang near your house/sitting area, which put off other wasps.
don't know if they work, but I'm tempted to buy one as there is nothing worse when you get the one nice evening, sitting outside for some food and pestered by wasps!.
Just done some more research, apparently you can simulate this with a large paper bag and make one yourself. THe key is to use it only a few hours before you want to clear the area, and then take it away. Wasps are slow but not stupid!

So you know how great Salsify is as a veg, what about Cavero Nero, great leaves all through the winter , then in Spring sprouting broccolli like flowers! Takes up half as much room as broccolli
Hi Cheezy can you post the link or info for making your own pretend wasp nests. I've heard good things about fake wasp nests but would rather make my own.

Ta.
It was just off the BBC's H2G2
http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/pda/A225839?s_id=6, not much detail. But I think if you could get a white/greyish bag like the hive colour. Also if you check out the waspinator shape you could probably simulate this

Worth a go 3M, so long as it isn't full as it might blow everywhere!

Cheers Cheezy. I'll give it a go as there are some monster ones about at the moment. I particularly love this line Take a paper bag as big as your head and blow it up.
I found a brown paper bag but have to report that it doesn't make a blind bit of difference. Best thing is to put a wasp trap on the table. Anyway they are now so bad that if we should have any more BBQ weather we'll be eating indoors.
Saturday was warm and humid (though grey ) so we decided to have a fish BBQ.
Sat down to eat and as usual with in 5 mins a wasp appeared and landed on MOH plate, accompanied with the usual shreaks and waving.
Better late than never I lept into action and found a greyish bag that we get from our cheese shop approx 20x20cm. I blew it up, not easy as the paper is very thin and tied it with some string. I then pushed in one corner of the bag , so it looked more like the "waspinator" in the link, more of a cone shape. I hung this up above our table, with a bit of sceptisism.
The same wasp was still buzzing about, it stopped the table assault and flew close to the bag. It then moved to a different view behind the bag and settled on a leaf, then it flew off.
Bearing in mind this wasp had detected and found our food, normally you can't shift them.
A second wasp arrived about 20mins later, but didn't get near the table before it shot off in the opposite direction.....and that was it no more visits.
Not scientific, but certainly worth a go. I think the colour of the bag and shape is important, as you have to fool the wasp into thinking its a hive.
However it'll probably be next year before we sit outside again!.

Well I've no end of them from our Cheese shop (Cheezy by name Cheesey by nature!), and we save them to pick our veg into from the lottie, and I put my kitchen peelings into them then chuck it all into the compost.
PM me if you like and I'll send a few via post for you to try
