shreaded paper for the chooks???

Post: # 221366Post Islaskye »

I go through a LOT of paper in my job which ends up shreaded for recycling.
some one said I can use it as bedding in the chicken coop, Does any one know if it is safe to use for this (Im a bit worried about the dust and fibres)

You can also dig it into your garden (with or without the chicken poo!). Breaks up clay soils ... eventually. Spread it out a bit so that it doesn't form a solid lump. If you have wood stove you can make those paper logs with it. Bit tedious though.

At the place I used to live we kept chickens and had no problems with using shreddings to line the coop. It was free so we regularly cleaned it out - obviously soiled patches every day and the whole lot every fortnight or so - and put that on the compost heap.

We do it all the time - it's a great feeling to have your bills covered in poop then dug into the garden!

Yes, I've used it for years. It's even better when you mix it with grass clippings. They help each other to break down in the compost heap and the chooks love it.

If you do have a log fire, a good layer of shredded paper makes a great firelighter.

having ex-batts & daft young things, I tend to put sawdust over the floor, and shredded paper in the nest boxes... to encourage them to differentiate between walking & laying places!

it ocasionally leaves a little print on a damp, warm egg, but its great & in my case free.
never say no to junk mail or leaflets handed out in the street either - every little helps!

Yes, I too use shredded paper in the nesting boxes and as you say it is free, well until my shredder packed up,but I have put wanted posts on freecycle for it and collected it when I am going to a place(all non essential journeys are cancelled here!due to petrol costs)most people don't know what to do with all the shreddings and are glad to see them go to a good home.

Does anyone know of a suitable shredder to shred newspaper, all those that I have tried have snarled up constantly. Thanks

A bit off-topic, but I use shredded paper in my wormery as it provides insulation when it's cold but is also a food for the worms.

You can use shredded paper in the compost bin. It is good because, not being totally flat it helps keep air in. it can be added before or after the chickens have used it!

Not sure about shredding newspaper Indy. It may be too soft and floppy!

We use shreddings to bed all our animals! It works a treat. Many large companies pay to dispose of their shreddings so are generally more than grateful if you ask them for it. Xx
