Anyone use vodka for anything other than drinking?

Post: # 222582Post southeast-isher »

I'm thinking about using (cheap) vodka to clean up a few things - i've read you can also use it to make things like perfume if you add essential oils. Anyone here using vodka or any other alcohol for that matter for anything other than drinking?

^^ This post was brought to you by the Vodka Marketing Association...

Vodka may be cheap, but isopropyl is cheaper.

Add vanilla sticks to make vanilla extract at a fraction of the cost of bought stuff (although it's best to use good vodka for this).

I'm stunned Milims that is such an amazing list you have come up with there. I don't have a clue what a jigger is mind you :dontknow:

I'm just going to start experimenting with Vodka for fragrances, but I'm not sure if it will last long enough to reach the perfume bottles :drunken:

I've used vodka to clean a water-damaged printed circuit board in my inverter (in lieu of Isopropanol). Unfortunately it didn't work (too many other issues) and I had to buy a new inverter (another thread!)

it is great for making herbal tinctures-just pack the herb into the vodka- I made some great comfrey tincture that way, vanilla essence has already been mentioned but I would def. makes some if I ever had vodka in the house. Also you can make an extract of fenugreek seeds by steeping in vodka and then add to a brown sugar syrup to make pretend maple syrup.

I've been researching the possibility of using horse chestnuts as a local alternative to soap nuts, and have learnt that the best solvent for extracting saponins from the nuts is a mixture of alcohol and water. Not sure what vodka would do to the laundry, but I may give it a go in the autumn.

I hate to say this (I really HATE it) but alcohol can be driven off by raising the solution above 70 degrees C for ten minutes or so.
