Any advice or suggestions please.
Any advice or suggestions please.
I'm not sure why but I think someone said it was to do with "drugs" anyhow I am struggling to get hold of Citric acid easily. I have agreed to do a massive batch of Elderflower cordial. My container is sized just over 15 litres. I have bought 18 kilos of sugar and I reckon I will need 120g citric acid? ( I think I worked it out to 5g = a teaspoon) well I have only got 20g. Is there an easy substitute or have I really got to drive 25 miles ( round trip) ?
Thanks for any advice.

Citric acid is used by drug dealers to bulk out their wares. Winemakers are therefore suspect. And you're right about 5g = 1 teaspoon (level). Luckily, lemon juice does just as well. The juice of half a lemon is equivalent to 5g of acid (sorry, citric acid, in case anyone assumes that I'm talking drugs too). If you have PLJ, you'll have to work that out from what it says on the bottle. At a push, you can also use orange juice, although that can affect the taste (not badly, but it may be noticeable).

Thanks Mike I hoped you would be quick. Any chance I'll finish picking 240 heads before nightfall? Naturally I will have to travel quite some way to avoid stripping a single area. Phew best I get going.
p.s that juice that I was making wine out of --- still working although it has slowed down to a plip every 14 seconds whereas last week it was still every 9 seconds. my two week wine is realistically at least 4.
Ho hum.

Not quite correct there, Mike. Citric acid is used in the process of cooking the heroin to prepare it for use. Acid is needed to help solidify all the impurities used to "cut" it and the solids can then be filtered out.
Anyway, you probably didn't need to know that, so suffice it to say you can buy citric acid from any chemists or home brew shop.

Do you have an ethnic Indian supermarket nearby? Spices and citric acid are cheap there. Also listed on fleabay!

In 25kg sacks by the pallet load it works out less than 98p a kilo!

No I won't use a smiley because I've decided to turn into Boboff, as he's turned all nice all of a sudden. Grumble grumble.

Sorry Green Aura perhaps where you live that is the case but Tewkesbury and Upton upon Severn are within 5 miles of me ( opposite directions) and although there are loads of chemists (including a big B**ts) and a number of health food shops. Not one sells citric acid. Only a home brew store sells it.
I remembered I had bought the last lot in Hereford (when I was working there)There is a home brew store in Cheltenham but it is 12+ miles (each way) its a busy place and parking is expensive and miles away from the shop.
I was trying to save myself the fuel for a specific item as well as 2 + hours on my day off.
Thanks to you too Marshlander but again the nearest is in Cheltenham and actually quite expensive, I once bought bulk rice there for someone (can't remember what it was but a really specific type) anyway the friend who had asked me to buy was very shocked at the price.
Flea bay is a good option but I was going to make it today, I should have thought of that a week earlier.

When I asked a couple of weeks ago my local Boots said that they hadn't stocked citric acid for the last six years. They could direct me to a local corner chemist that did though. 5g of citric acid is significantly cheaper than a lemon.
