When will they learn?
I've been reading news items about the spread of Ash die back and wondering why we haven't learnt from history with sudden oak death and going back a bit - dutch elm disease. It's not as if ash are hard to propagate in the uk. I see imports will be banned from Monday but as the disease was first found in the UK in February I hope it's not too late.

The other concern with importing young native trees, or even moving young trees from one part of the UK to another, is that it destroys regional variations in the genetics of populations. These are not significant enough to generate speciation but do contain local adaptations to local environmental conditions.

The death of so many palm trees across the Mediterranean was caused by importing date palm trees from Egypt, infested with red palm weevils, and it's rapid spread across the region has been caused by the transportation of palms and offshoots from contaminated to uninfected areas.

They won't learn. The wheels of commerce must roll unimpeded by such fripperies and common sense and responsibility.

If there's money to be made they will do it.
