Hello from Perth, West Australia

Post: # 27351Post Rusty »

Hi everyone,

Am I glad that I stumbled across your corner of the web - already you have solved many of my problems and for that I thank you so much.

We are in the suburbs here in sunny Perth, with sandy soil and endless sunshine - or so it seems. Our block is a regular sized on with chickens, vegetables and fruits of all sorts - often changing and never the same !!!

I am trying my best to recycle and be organic and so far are doing a wonderful job - if I do say so myself!!

We have three chooks and 1000 worms to help with our recycling and they combined are creating enough fertiliser to help out all my friends and relatives.

The eggs are the best by-product from the fertiliser factories that are our chickens - also an endless source of entertainment when they are out and about.

As I have said, we are trying and suceeded fairly well.

It is great to "meet" you all and I am looking forward to the exchange of news and info - it would be a wonderous thing if I could actually pass on help to others (hold on, I need to walk before I can gallop in the Grand National !!!)

Hi Rusty

Welcome to the site - looking forward to getting to know you and hearing more about your fertiliser factories

Sounds like you've got a great set up over there - we've got chooks, ducks and geese and a couple of goats for lawnmowers and milk (from one of them)

We live north of Perth lol... but it's the Perth in Scotland rather than the one in Oz

Hi Rusty. I spot the fervour of a true convert! It sounds like you are doing a super job and enjoying yourself as well. I feel the same about our set-up here in Cheshire, England. There comes a point where you really get the bug and you start getting very ambitious. Where other people are sceptical and cautious "Well, I suppose I could recycle some of my bottles, but no way am I starting a compost heap! Ewwww!" people like you and me are eager to dive into worm composting and straw bale building projects and chicken keeping and composting toilets. Well not literally dive into composting toilets. But you know what I mean.

LOL at the thought of diving into a compost toilet - I love the way you write Chickpea :flower:

Quite fancy one of those... especially as the water situation here is clearly not good.... any way of saving water is going to be useful.

G'Day Rusty Mate!

What part of Perth? I used to get over there for work a couple of years a go, to Welshpool. Have you been in the 12volt shop there?

Welome to the site!

Another brother in the church o'vermicomposting! Amazing how the little guys can demolish a heap of yard & kitchen waste, isn't it! And such a wonderful result. Black gold.

Many years ago I took a plywood box out of a truck and filled it to the top with leaves; bought a chinese takeout box full of redworms, threw 'em in, shut the lid and literally forgot about it for two years...When I went to open it I was filled with dread that the worms would be dead. Instead the box had a layer of black dirt in it six inches thick--and lots and lots of happy red worms!! I was sold on it...box o'worms, a buck or two. Never having to turn a pile--priceless!

Hi Rusty, and welcome!

I have happy memories of YOUR Perth, too... A long time ago I visited. (Ooops, it's more than 20 years now! Showing my age gain).

And one of these days I'll get myself a few proper worms, too, and make them do some of the work I'm still doing myself in turning the compost!
