netting
I was looking for some kind of netting to protect newly planted stuff and for strawbs when they come through. I often help my friend with her horses and she gets large round bales of haylage from the local farmer for feeding. They are wrapped up in this fine, light, plastic netting. PERFECT! They are light enough to lift and lay, roll up small for storing and best of all free and recycled. So I have a nice wee stash of netting and access to more if and when I need it!

Netting
Hi HAy,
You could also use the onion bags that the supermarket get onions in. I have a few of these, I have cut the sewn edge and opened them out.
Actually I put one out this morning, as I have bok choy, swede, and rocket seedlings up and I dont want the birds to get them.

It depends what they feed their horses. It comes in huge rolls and is attached to balers for the round bales that farmers make. I just discovered that my brother in law (farmer) usually has ends lying around (like the end of carpets) too small for baler so you might get some on a farm that makes hay. If I have any spare (got to do some measuring) I can send some (it is very light) if you can't get any where you are.
I've got digital camera here if you want me to post a couple of pics, easier than trying to describe!

I have taken some measurements!
A piece coming off a bale will be around 30ft long, 5ft unstretched and around 6 and a half ft stretched tight, weighs around 100grms. It is tough nylon with small enough holes to keep cats, birds etc off crops.
One of the ways I will use it is to put canes through the holes (leave extra at each end) and as the plant grows just slide up the pole and peg down the bottom into the ground to make complete protection.
I have taken a couple of pics and reduced size but am unsure of how to insert image here. Anyone care to explain!

Re: netting
You have to link to an image that is hosted somewhere else - rhyddid wrote quite a good explanation here http://www.selfsufficientish.com/Forum/ ... ight=#2262hay331 wrote:I have taken a couple of pics and reduced size but am unsure of how to insert image here. Anyone care to explain!
However, I think I found out that it won't work if your link is via a web forwarding service, or if you post the pic on some photo hosting sites. I find http://tinypic.com easy to upload images to, but it seems you can only post the resulting URL here for people to click on - the link won't work with the image tags.

You've found out what I found out - for some reason the links don't work when you upload your pics to this photo hosting site. The site is a useful place to upload your pics for others to see, but for some reason, the best you can do is simply post the URLs as links for people to click on, like this:

Thanks for that
Althought the pics are on the small side it should give an idea of what it looks like.
