Greetings from Hungary!

We love hearing from you, so here is your chance. Introduce yourself and tell us what makes you selfsufficient 'ish'. Go on don't be shy, we welcome one and all. You can also tell us how you heard about us if you like.

Greetings from Hungary!

Post: # 49511Post firelite »

Hi, I've been reading the site for a while - decided to join the forums now :) I'm a Finnish student (comp lit & philosophy) who ran away from her theoretical studies to Hungary, to indulge in the local language & fine art for half a year. Also, I love the sunshine here.

Apart from my studies, I volunteer at an UG nonprofit radio station, doing everything from paperwork to radio shows to posters and flyers to organizing gigs.

While I can't really say I would have been too self-sufficient this far, having only lived in small block apartments without balconies ->no real possibility of growing anything, I do try to be as ecological as possible, and dream of joining an eco-community after university.

Szia Zöld-Lány, hogy vagy? ;)

You're going to love Hungary, I know I do. Organic products are everywhere here -- there are lots of organic shops, though at least in my city fresh veggies are difficult to find as organic. But at least I don't have to go to T***o for veggies here (yes, everybody shops in T***o here): there are little vegetabe stalls down many streets...

While organic food is popular here, fair trade coffee is unheard-of, and recycling opportunities are scarce. Seems to me that here, organic food is more a "luxus food" of the more well-off people, than an eco choice.

If you're into wine, you should make a trip to one of the wine-growing regions -- you can buy grapes and wines straight from the producer... and they also make delicious sparkling wines here. But be careful with Pálinka - every hungarian will try to get some of that down your throat, but it's a vicious drink! You have been warned! :DD
