Hello from another newbie from New Zealand

Post: # 73080Post getting there »

Hi I'm Emily, I'm a solo mum to my 18mo daughter Loralei and I'm studying english and geography. We've only just begun our journey towards a self sufficient ethical lifestyle. Being me I'll never be satisfied with what I'm doing so the following list will probably keep on growing...:

99.5% of dd's clothes are second hand.
only use eco store products as a transition on the way to baking soda, lemon juice and vinegar.
starting to recycle (it helps that our little town now has a recycling trailer thingy).
mooncup
Bamboo mama pads
converting to (bamboo) cloth nappies
re-usable wipes for both of us
reusable shopping bags
don't own a car
buy organic where available
buy nz products where available
shower/bath every other day (basin washes in between) hoping to cut back even more.
only use the half flush.
yellow mellows.
breastfeed.
lower watt bulbs changing to eco bulbs soon.
don't own a dryer or dishwasher.
eat meat once a week (too expensive).
only cold wash in laundry.
try to run water as little as possible, keep picking up tips on this.
do dishes in a plastic basin and recycle the water in the garden.
have two lights max on at anytime preferable one.
try to work my days so I don't need the lights on as much.
use reusable containers for lunches storage etc.
started composting (so the local farmer doesn't get our scraps anymore so more free pork :( ).
started digging my organic veggie garden.
have a mature lemon tree and hope to plant other fruit trees when I can.
use baking soda to shampoo and apple cider vinegar to condition.

I'm looking forward to picking up plenty more tips and ideas from everyone here.

ps: I found this site while googling for organic ways to deal with slugs snails and other pests.

Just because I can't do everything I won't fail to do something.

Hi Emily

Welcome to the Ishers!

You have an impressive list there - and your daughter looks as if she's done that much digging in the garden that her hands are already twice the normal size...

I use baking soda for all sorts of things in the cleaning department - but I've never used it as shampoo. Have to try that.

here's a couple of links I found helpful in learning how to use baking soda as shampoo.

Hi- I found this website googling for organic ways to deal with slugs too! Have tried absolutley everything I ahve to admit- having an allotment with more open space and less bushes to hide in seemed the only way!
