BATTERY HENS NEED LOVE!
BATTERY HENS NEED LOVE!
Hello,
I know this is probably telling my grandma how to suck eggs but I notice that there is no mention of the Battery Hens Welfare Association on this site and I think it is a same, as the mentality of the fantastic people who run this organisation is very similar to that of this site.
Basically they take as many hens as they can from battery farms which would otherwise, after one year of miserable life, be destined for the Whiskas factory or supermarket own brand chicken pie.
They trim their overgrown nails, repair broken legs and find new homes for them to live out a (quite productive) retirement, with people like us. I am new to henkeeping but have now had my flock of 5 for a year, and they could not be nicer pets. Everyone should have at least two!!
Please check out the website at www.thehenshouse.co.uk and have a look at the heartwarming work they do.
Thanks!!

It sounds like an excellent program, we don't have anything like it here in Canada, but some farms will let you buy "culls" for a very small amount of money.
We only know of one farm giving away birds after a year and we haven't located it yet, but a friend did and got us our hens at the same time.

Any idea who to get ex-batterys from in Scotland, I'd love to give a home to a few, but the hens house don't do this far north.
By the way, its a fab idea.

I'm pretty sure they've been discussed too.
Please, stick around and offer help and advice! There are plenty of people who join asking about getting/rehabilitating poultry, so your knowledge could be invaluable!

I met a lady through my local freecycle group who re-homes battery hens here on the IOW. My 3 aren't ex-bat but we did save the 1st one from an uncertain future and the other 2 we acquired from another local who was splitting up their flock. I have room for a couple more and am just waiting for the next lot of ex-bats to arrive.
