Non flowering spuds

Post: # 5624Post davey »

Hi all

I'm hoping someone has an answer to this one.

This is the first time I have ever grown spuds and although I planted my early and second early spuds way back in April. To date only a couple of the plants have flowered. The plants look healthy and still seem to be growing actively.

Any clues or should I dig 'em anyway?

Only a couple of mine flowered but I dug them up anyway and altho I had some good sized ones some were tiny. I would wait if you can. I wanted room for something else.

It's unlikely you would have missed the flowers, they are usually on the top of the plants.

Did you use nitrogen fertiliser? That would give you lots of leaves, and little of anything else.

Maybe you can just have a rummage around under one of the plants, to see what is going on in the spud department.

I haven't grown the varieties you mentioned, has anyone else had experience with them?

I generally use Fish, Blood and bone fertilizer with occassional doses of lquid seaweed extract so I wouldn't have thought that excessive Nitrogen was the problem.
