Next Saturday is family barbie day - two sisters, two BILs, me and the OH. It's an odd family because one of my sisters is just reconverting to being British after 30 years in Australia, her hubby is Oz through and through, although of Polish and Russian parentage, other sister is eldest and therefore matriarchal and her man is just a nutter. Anyway, I love 'em all dearly and want to impress. I've decided on Spanish food because I love that too.
However, does anyone have the Spanish recipe which makes everyone go "Oooohhh!!!" You know what I mean, don't you? It's the dish you clearly remember three months later, and not just because the garlic keeps repeating on you. Any ideas?
Good Spanish food

Most of my Spanish recipes have been converted to vegan/vegetarian, HOWEVER I founf these two lurking in my recipe folder and I can vouch for the Pata Bravas, they are scrummy.
And you can't beat a Tortilla either.
Patata Bravas (Spicy Potatoes)
2 lb Potatoes
1 red Pepper, diced
1 can Tomatoes, mashed
Half a cup Spanish Olives with Pimento
Quarter teaspoon Garlic powder
Half teaspoon Onion powder
1-3 teaspoons Chili powder
2 cups water
Half a cup of Capers
In a large, lightly oiled heavy skillet, cook Peppers for 5 minutes then add Tomatoes, Olives, powders, water and Potatoes. Bring to boiling and cook uncovered, stirring occasionally for 20 minutes or until fork-tender.
Stir in Capers. Let stand 5 minutes to allow liquids to absorb.
Add more Capers for garnish if desired.
Tortilla (Spanish Omlette)
2 tablespoons Olive oil
1 large Onion sliced
200g Potatoes
100g Spinach
1 tablespoon fresh parsley
8 eggs beaten and seasoned
75g Chedder cheese
Heat oil in a frying pan.
Add Onion with a pinch of salt.
Cover and saute until vey soft and starting to caramelise (about 10 minutes).
Add Potatoes and saute until soft (another 10 minutes).
Add Spinach and Parsley.
Pour in the seasoned eggs and half the cheese.
Sprinkle the remaining cheese over the top.
Cover over low heat until the tortilla begins to set (about 15 minutes).
Flip over or finish under a low/medium grill for 5 minutes.
Wait for a few minutes before turning out.

How is your Spanish? I recently made Tarte de Santiago (AKA Tarte de almendras compostelana), the almond tart famous in Santiago de Compostela in Northern Spain:

You can read the recipe from another photo I took of the recipe book. I only used half the quantities given and ended up with the right amount for my 8" flan dish.

If you look at the full size version it is fairly clear (and about 1.6MB) or, if you think you might try it, I could type it up in a rough translation.
