You all seem to be such proficient chefs. Well here is a place to share some of that cooking knowledge. Or do you have a cooking problem? Ask away. Jams and chutneys go here too.
Spent some time with a friend this week (helping decorate her bathroom!), she is a past master on bread and gets up in the wee small hours to bake. She uses fresh yeast and apparently if you ask at T***o's instore bakery they will give you an ounce free! she said to ask one of the younger ones as you always get more as they don't know how much an ounce is perhaps worth a try at the other big stores, might as well try to squeeze something from them!

Asda do it also. i've never bought yeast for a good 20 years now.... I love my asda... I'm told that yeast also freezes well for a few weeks but I never have any that lasts that long to try it. All my asda bakers know me now and as soon as thety see me they have a bag to hand over........
I tried this at my local waitrose last week, no dice - the girl behind the counter said they didn't have any yeast so I guess they must get the bread in part-baked and finish it off.

Ellendra above mentions 10 year old yeast... i wonder if it is like fine wine... matures with age.
