Lovely job  what wood are you using for them hyperion? I bought one to use as a template (for weaving but I'll be trying netting too) I think it's Balsa - and I was wondering whether maple or horse chestnut would work.

the best wood ive found to use is green oak, its just easier to work with than most woods as well as being stronger too, plus it goes a lovely pale honey colour with a couple of coats of boiled linseed oil!

i dont know about maple as ive never used it but i think horse chesnut would be too brittle and might split along the grain!

ive just finished making a needle out of rowan, lovely light wood to work with but a bit less forgiving than oak if you make a mistake!

edit to say ill be making a much bigger needle soon so i can have a go at knitting a hammock!

 Thanks for that info - just that those are what I have growing and need a top trim so they avoid the overhead powerlines.

I know absolutely nothing about all this - I know I'm squeamish - but I do have that knife you show in the middle.

It was my Dads. Can you tell me anything about it? I don't even know what it's for - but it's hellish sharp even now (he died 14 years ago).

its an opinel, the make! cant remember what number it is though!

err its just a general all purpose pocket knife really! i use it for every thing from rabbiting to wood carving!

they wont hold an edge for any great length of time once you start using it but its easy to sharpen again!

Looks exactly like mine - Opinel, made in France I think, general use penknife. It locks open with the little ring device at the top of the handle, which is wood, very comfortable knife to use.
I well sliced a finger with my mini one which didn't have the lock (mis-using it on a chair restoration project  )
